Essential Qualifications and Skills
Minimum
- A honours degree in Veterinary Medicine from a recognised degree awarding body and be registered, or eligible to register, as a Veterinary Practitioner with the Veterinary Council of Ireland.
- A Master’s Degree in a relevant Level 9 Programme [as specified in the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)] or equivalent.
- Three years relevant post-qualification experience.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
Desirable
- A postgraduate qualification.
- Qualified at PhD level or equivalent experience within the Veterinary field
- Experience of lecturing in an accredited third level environment in Veterinary Medicine particularly in years 1-3 of a Veterinary Medicine programme.
- Relevant clinical experience.
- Experience in the development of new programmes and curricular development.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Experience in conducting research.
Overview of the Role
ATU is a new Technological University in the west and northwest of Ireland formed from the merger of three Institutes of Technology in 2022. The Faculty of Science and Health is developing a new programme of study in Veterinary Medicine with a view to welcoming the first cohort of students in September 2025. This programme will complement existing programmes in Veterinary Nursing and Agriculture and increase the provision of Veterinary Medicine education in Ireland. This is a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced individual to join the Veterinary Medicine programme team and to shape veterinary medicine education provision in Ireland.
Duties
The Lecturer will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration. The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned to them in accordance with collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the Minister including but not limited to:
- Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by the management of the Technological University, day or evening, up to 560 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate. There will be a norm of 16 class contact hours per week,
- Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities;
- Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development; and course co-ordination;
- Engaging in research, consultancy and development work as appropriate;
- Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management;
- Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management;
- Engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate;
- Promoting scholarship;
- Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements;
- Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their department/school and of the Technological University;
- Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work. .
The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week.
The appointee shall carry out the lawful instructions of the President (or Nominee) and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister.
Salary
Lecturer Salary Scale €66,252 – €102,509
Candidates may be considered for incremental credit above point 1 of the scale for previous relevant industry experience in accordance with University Policy.
Where an assistant Lecturer or lecturer currently employed in a Technological University/Institute of Technology is appointed to a post that is lower than the current grade, then the starting salary shall be the salary point which is equal to or immediately above the point currently held on the present grade or the maximum of the new scale – whichever is the lesser – and he/she shall retain his/her existing incremental date.
