About the Role:

The Associate Scientist, Biology Research is a hands-on role to execute in vitro and in vivo experiments in cell lines, primary cells, as well as behavioral and pharmacological rodent models to evaluate novel treatments for inflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders. Within a dynamic and engaging environment, you will interact with scientific investigators to plan and execute in vitro cell-based assays and preclinical rodent studies. Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication ability are required. The primary tasks for this position will include culturing primary cells, iPSCs and cell lines, develop and run cell-based assays, measure biochemical endpoints, evaluating compound treatment in vivo on PK/PD studies and efficacy studies and process tissue and run immunohistochemistry studies.

Your Contributions (include, but are not limited to):
  • Proficiency in immunohistology techniques and tissue processing:

  • Prepares and produces microscopic slides of various tissue (Cryosectioning, fixation, embedding, sectioning, and mounting). Expert in immunostains (IHC, ICC, IF), perform antibody/target validation of therapeutics. Experience operating cryostat machine

  • Experience in maintaining sterile tissue culture environments in the expansion of multiple cell lines, human primary iPSC and immune cells, and culture of primary mouse neuronal and glial cells

  • Execute cell-based assays related to inflammation and neurodegeneration, such as cytokine detection with MSD, luminescent cell viability, Nitric Oxide detection, ELISA, and Flow Cytometry.

  • Functional cell assays, biochemistry, and high content imaging techniques

  • Process to target validation, analyze pathology stage with cell and tissue expression by RNA, Western Blotting and IHC

  • Rodent in vivo experiments: breeding, animal handling, test article dosing via various administration routes (PO, IP, SC, IV), behavioral monitoring, data collection, as well as data interpretation/analysis

  • Performing perfusion, necropsy, dissections and tissue collection

  • Assist with behavioral assay/model development

  • Present data at internal group/team meetings

  • Efficiently managing scheduling of studies, and managing own time to complete assigned work by due dates

  • Exhibit strong adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocols, maintaining accurate records of experimental procedures and results

  • Assisting in other related procedures as assigned by the supervisor

  • Data analysis and reporting

  • Handle and dose animals in a laboratory setting

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:
  • BS/BA degree in biological sciences preferably related to neuroscience, immunology or pharmacology and some experience with cell culture and handling and dosing animals in a laboratory setting OR

  • MS/MA degree in biological sciences preferably related to neuroscience, immunology or pharmacology and some experience with cell culture and handling and dosing animals in a laboratory setting

  • Experience culture cell lines and human primary cells

  • Experience in biochemistry assays and strong knowledge of immunohistology techniques

  • Experience in handling rodents and general familiarity with behavioral analysis

  • Experience with in vivo pharmacology and efficacy studies including multiple dosing routes of administration and necropsy procedures

  • Can independently manage and troubleshoot rodent studies for in vivo endpoints

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as some basic graphical and/or statistical software (e.g., Prism, Spotfire, JMP, etc.)

  • Superior attention to detail, punctual, flexible, and an outstanding team-player who is comfortable working on and prioritizing multiple projects

  • Able to execute experiments efficiently and suggest small process improvements

  • Able to recognize patterns or inconsistencies in data results

  • Able to deduce meaningful results while conducting routine analyses or troubleshoot minor issues. Good knowledge of one scientific discipline

  • Developing knowledge of scientific principles, methods and techniques

  • Good knowledge and some experience working with discipline specific laboratory equipment/tools

  • Good computer skills

  • Developing communications, problem-solving, analytical thinking, planning and organization skills

  • Understands importance of meeting deadlines

  • High level of organization and attention to detail

  • Willingness and ability to work both independently and as part of a team

The hourly rate we reasonably expect to pay is $33.98-$48.01. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as primary work location, complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus with a target of 15% of the earned base salary and eligibility to participate in our equity based long term incentive program. Benefits offered include a retirement savings plan (with company match), paid vacation, holiday and personal days, paid caregiver/parental and medical leave, and health benefits to include medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans.
