About the Department

The Intestinal Regenerative Medicine Laboratory is within the Department of Clinical Sciences (DOCS), administered by the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University.
The Gonzalez Lab is a basic/translational research lab at North Carolina State University that studies: (1) ischemia/reperfusion injury, (2) mechanisms by which intestinal stem cells mediate epithelial repair, and (3) improved means to determine tissue viability following injury. We focus on utilizing large animal, predominantly porcine and equine, models in our work.

The Department of Clinical Sciences (DOCS) is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging animal-owning public, government, and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.

Essential Job Duties

The primary role of this position will be to perform research projects focused on improving the outcome for patients who require intestinal transplantation.

The projects involve benchtop cell culture experiments (2D and 3D intestinal stem cell culture), flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, ex-vivo normothermic machine perfusion, and studies using surgical pig models.

Main Duties Include:
  • Monitoring an intestinal allograft during normothermic machine perfusion
  • Participating in live animal surgeries related to the research project
  • Collecting and processing intestinal samples

In addition to research-related duties, the individual will be responsible for providing back-up support for graduate student and post-doctoral student projects.

Other Responsibilities

  • Other responsibilities may include providing clinical support to patients when needed and other duties related to the research.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work
  • Experience in a biology or Biomedical Sciences laboratory setting

  • General knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Accurate record-keeping, and data collection
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team
  • Ability to coordinate various resources
