We are seeking a Prototype Manufacturing Engineer to help us ensure the successful delivery of large, critical, and complex manufacturing projects through technical expertise in manufacturing. The ME will work with staff at all levels to implement design for manufacturing principles, improve efficiency and quality, and drive projects to completion.
As a Prototype Manufacturing Engineer your primary responsibility will be working with multidisciplinary teams to solve some of the nation’s critical challenges, providing design for manufacturing expertise to improve quality and performance, compress schedules, and reduce cost of complex mechanical hardware.
As a Prototype Manufacturing Engineer you will...
- Represent mechanical fabrication as a subject matter expert in space, land, sea, and air based projects.
- Collaborate with design engineers to create systems for manufacturability.
- Engage in R&D efforts to develop novel fabrication methods and practices.
- Collaborate with other team members to develop estimates and schedules.
- Maintain awareness of manufacturing advancements.
- Help to create a thriving manufacturing ecosystem at APL.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Possess a B.S. in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering.
- Have 3+ years of demonstrated experience related to a number of fabrication subject areas. You should have a basic understanding of all of the areas, and in depth understanding of 1or 2 of the areas. The areas include: 3 & 5 axis machining, turning, EDM, sheet metal, welding, additive, composites, and molds.
- Have designed several prototypes or configured hardware.
- Experience with CAD tools such as CREO or SolidWorks.
- Understand GD&T to a basic level.
- Are willing and able to perform work in a laboratory setting and travel for field testing, sponsor visits, conference attendance, and presentations.
- Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Have mechanical stress analysis experience with an understanding of basic failure modes.
- Have expertise in GD&T and are able to match the proper inspection methods associated.
- Have experience working in PLM software tools.
- Have engaged in drawing and design review of several unique parts not designed by you.
